Speak it, Read it, Write it

Looking for opportunities to use the language? Want to know more about Europe and Germany? Interested in travelling to Switzerland or studying in Austria? Thinking about including your new linguistic ability into your current field of study? Check out these resources:

  • Deutsche Welle: Get your news and information from this great international resource for students of German. Available in 30 languages. Podcasts, streaming new audio, radio programs, downloadable material, tutorials, free online courses and more.
  • E Tandem: Free international program which helps you find a native speaker language partner for speaking or writing. For example: You help a German speaker learn English, and he helps you learn German. Partners are paired according to ability, and communicate through email, letters, phone, Instant Message, Skype…or whatever you and your partner arrange. You many choose to stop communications at any time.
  • Uniblogs: Free blogs for university and college students. Blog in German! It’s a great way to practise your writing skills. Uniblogs are easy to use, and you can choose from many different themes for the look of your blog.
  • Deutsche Blogcharts: Browse through the top 100 blogs in Germany and leave comments, using what German you’ve learned.
  • Youth Hostels in Germany: Shoestring budget? Travel through Germany by overnighting in hostels. These accomodations are only a day’s hike apart, averaging between $16 and $25 a night. See also Youth Hostels in Austria and Switzerland.
  • Books:  Finding helpful books for furthering your German studies is often difficult.  This British publishing company offers a wide variety of interesting and useful texts to help you continue studying German.
